Holy moly
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:24 |

Jalopnik has little if any writers left. It is super apparent with all the reshares and crap posts. It is really sad.

Yeah it seems like my favorite site is about to be killed off. Probably an ancillary cut due to the hulkamania decision. Have you tried using the site on mobile? Holy crap more ads than ever before and getting on up there with buzzfeed in clickbaity-mess.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:27 |

Well, Shit. Gawker really does seem to be killing it’s automotive/moto brands. :/

Mobile is practically unusable these days. Even more so than usual.

Further evidence that Gawker knows that this is the beginning of the end. Such a shame Jalopnik can’t just disconnect itself from the mothership. Jalopnik has had infinitely better journalistic integrity than the vast majority of Gawker blogs. I would also add ROYGBIV and Kotaku since they follow a narrow subject like Jalopnik too.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:33 |

Wait, how many corespondents did have Gawker have in Budapest?
One?
Shame, I liked Mate’s stuff.

Whaaat, dagnammit, hulkmania can eat a dick.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Máté is a bazillion times better than the clowns on the other sites. 100% bull fucking SHIT!!!!!!!!!!

Wait, what?! Welp, it’s the beginning of the end.

Well, fuck.

Having a staff in Hungary was always an oddity anyway and it's not surprising it's a cut when there's belt tightening to be done...too bad they didn't keep Mate on as an independent, his stuff was alright.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:36 |

Well that really sucks. Good luck Mate!
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:39 |

Nooooo, I really liked the European Jalopnik staff, and I’m afraid this will not be the end of the firing.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:43 |
|
I’m just observing the fire that Jalopnik’s producing at this point, it’s sad, but it’s not like it’s not a shock.
Also, when it comes to stuff like this, am I the only one imagining Denton looking like palpatine, sitting in his throne room going "good. good."
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:44 |

The Budapest office still houses ad operations, tech, and engineering staff. I wonder if we’ll get some additional insight into Sean’s abrupt firing now that Mate is gone.

DAMMIT, BROTHER.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:52 |

Based on the fact that he just posted something on the FP this morning, I’m guessing this was quite abrupt. Who’s next? My bet is Tavarish.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 12:52 |

Jesus... did he find out he was fired because he got locked out of the Jalopnik Facebook page?! If so, that’s all sorts of fucked up:

Sorry Mate.
I hate this. Gawker screws up royally by not running stuff past the legal team, gets sued and the good people suffer.
Standing on the backs of good people to get promotion then cutting them off to save themselves. Bunch of dicks.

He had a few posts on the front page over the past few days, seemingly more than usual. I wouldn’t be surprised if they cleared out everything he had coming for the week before letting him go.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 13:03 |

This sucks. Máté was one of the good guys.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 13:05 |

Why hire writers when you can just share posts from other blogs/oppositelock and collect the ad revenue. Which brings me to my next question. Do they ask permission from the writer whenever a post from here gets shared on the FP. Seems to be happening a lot more often recently.

Yet DeMuro still exists to ruin long collections of words about himself.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 13:21 |

Sometimes. My last one on the front page had Tom tell me to email Patrick who shared it.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 13:34 |

Buh bye gawker.
![]() 05/17/2016 at 13:34 |

It depends. I submit articles that I consider to be FP worthy (both my own and by others) to tips@jalopnik or to PG directly. But occasionally I’ve been surprised by a share that I didn’t expect or even try for.
Bottom line, they don’t need your explicit permission to repost. If it’s here, they can share it however they like.

I’m as curious as you are, but if Sean hasn’t commented I doubt we’ll learn any details. I respect that, because you won’t go far in any career by bashing your former employer, especially in auto/moto journalism where the community is so everyone-knows-everyone.

Patrick had the decency to call me before I got the official email. While we were talking, I got locked of of Slack and got this email from Facebook.
They say my email will work until Friday, but if you want to reach me, I would say matepetrany@gmail.com is a safer choice.

4 on the editorial team. Attila at Gizmodo and two at Kotaku.

The end began when Tyler and Sean left.

Hey Máté, thank you for responding. I’m so sorry this is happening. It’s not cool at all. I hope you land on your feet soon at a place that has more respect for its employees.
I know you may not want to hang around these parts for very long (I mean, it’s understandable), but I’m sure you’d be more than welcome to keep hanging out here on Oppo if you ever feel like it (for as long as Oppo exists, that is). Please don’t be a stranger, and please let us know where we can continue to follow your work.
Best of luck.

I don’t visit Gizmodo or Kotaku, so I had no idea.
I thought it was just you. Sorry man.

Really sorry to hear that Mate. I always enjoyed your stuff and was jealous of your European adventures. Hopefully more opportunities are on the horizon.

Well Sean was fired, but maybe Tyler saw some writing on the wall and got out early before he was fired.

Sorry to hear it. I loved your articles and your European slant on car culture. Good luck to you.

An oppo-group-buy of Jalopnik, which would probably only cost about threefiddy, should have as an added benefit for us that we can take turns driving Doug’s Aston, since we’re paying for it.

Wait... where’s BMan76? He has a Firebird... Mate hates Firebirds... BMan76 was probably hungry for revenge... Mate is in Hungary... BMan76 says it doesn’t need a WS6 hood, Mate would say it clearly does... BMan76 recently made some upgrades to his Firebird which would enable it to stop faster... Mate was likely the victim of a black bag operation that would require a powerful and fast-stopping vehicle, perhaps with a large glass hatch and long doors to throw him into... GET THE PITCHFORKS YAARRRGGGHHHH
